In a media advisory, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said Washington Sundar complained of acute discomfort in his left lower rib area while bowling during the opening ODI of the three-match series at the BCA Stadium in Kotambi. The advisory added that Washington will undergo further scans, following which the BCCI Medical Team will seek an expert opinion. The Men’s Selection Committee has named Ayush Badoni as his replacement. Badoni will join the India squad in Rajkot, where the second ODI against New Zealand will be played. Badoni is a right-hand batter and bowls right-arm off-spin.Before Washington was ruled out, the BCCI released a video featuring Shreyas Iyer, Harshit Rana and Washington Sundar. In the video, Washington said he enjoyed the situation (coming in to bat during a crucial phase in the first ODI) and spoke about fulfilling a childhood dream of helping the team win games.
He also praised KL Rahul’s batting and explained that his role was to handle the late overs and keep Rahul on strike.
With 10 runs needed from 10 balls, Washington gave Rahul the strike on the third ball of the 49th over. Rahul then hit two boundaries followed by a six to seal the win for India."It was fun. I owe this to little Washi, who has watched so many games like these on TV and told himself that you do anything to win the game for your team. KL batted beautifully, and knowing he was there, I knew I didn't have to take too much risk, I just had to play the 48th and 49th over and make sure it's him who is batting for the last 10 balls in the game," Sundar said.
