BAN vs PAK, 2nd Test, Day 3 Highlights: Mushfiqur Rahim's ton puts Bangladesh in commanding position; Pakistan need 437 to square the series

BAN vs PAK, 2nd Test, Day 3 Highlights: Litton Das struck a brilliant century to rescue Bangladesh national cricket team from a dramatic top-order collapse as the hosts posted 278 in their first innings on Day 1 of the second and final Test against Pakistan national cricket team on Saturday.

Pakistan ended the day at 21 without loss in reply, with Azan Awais unbeaten on 13 and Abdullah Fazal on 8 in Sylhet.

Litton leads Bangladesh recovery

Coming in at No. 6, Litton played a counter-attacking knock of 126 off 159 balls, smashing 16 fours and two sixes for his sixth Test century. His innings came at a crucial time after Bangladesh slumped to 116/6 shortly after lunch.

Pakistan, already trailing 1-0 in the two-match series following their 104-run defeat in Mirpur, opted to bowl first after winning the toss — a decision that paid immediate dividends.

Pakistan strike early

Bangladesh opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy was dismissed for a duck after edging Mohammad Abbas to second slip off the second ball of the match.

Debutant Tanzid Hasan looked promising during his quickfire 26 off 34 balls, hitting three boundaries before attempting an ambitious pull shot against Abbas, who completed the catch off his own bowling.

Mominul Haque was then bowled for 22 by Khurram Shahzad.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and veteran batter Mushfiqur Rahim tried to stabilise the innings with a 43-run partnership.

Collapse after lunch

However, Bangladesh lost momentum immediately after lunch, losing three wickets for just 15 runs.

Shanto edged Abbas behind for 29, Mushfiqur was trapped lbw for 23, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz fell for four after being caught at deep fine leg, leaving the hosts reeling at 116/6.

Lower order supports Litton

Litton found valuable support from the lower order. He stitched together a patient 60-run partnership with Taijul Islam, who scored 16 off 114 balls. Litton reached his fifty in 93 balls before accelerating rapidly.

The right-hander needed only 42 more deliveries to complete his century, bringing it up with a stylish cover drive off Shahzad before dispatching the very next ball for six.

Litton then added 38 runs alongside Taskin Ahmed and followed it up with a crucial 64-run ninth-wicket stand with Shoriful Islam off just 73 balls.

"The most important thing in this innings is that Taijul, Taskin and Shoriful all batted well and faced a lot of balls," Litton said.

Pakistan rue missed reviews

Pakistan also missed two crucial review opportunities during Bangladesh’s innings. Replays later showed faint edges from Mushfiqur and Litton, but captain Shan Masood chose not to challenge the umpire’s decisions.

"We were getting wickets early on. Unluckily, we missed a couple of reviews," said Shahzad.

"If we had gotten them out there, the situation would have been completely different."

Into the final day - What Pakistan has admirably done well is to push this game into the fifth day. They have worked hard and their batting looked a lot more organised in the second innings compared to their first dig. But with only Mohammad Rizwan as the recognised batter out in the middle, one end stays exposed with him tasked to shepherd the tail for as long as possible. Bangladesh are just three wickets away, and they would want to wrap it up tomorrow in the first session itself.

17:12 (IST) May 19

A valiant fight in the third session - Pakistan were staring into the abyss, but Rizwan and Agha have hauled them back into the contest with a brilliant 134-run partnership. Gritty when they needed to be, proactive when the opportunity arose, the two batted with real maturity. Both were well-set to carry Pakistan forward. But Bangladesh knew that one breakthrough here could bring the house down. Just when panic was about to set in the Bangladeshi camp, it was Taijul Islam who broke the back of Pakistan's lower middle order with the second new ball. He dismissed the well-set Salman Agha and fished out Hasan Ali as well. The tourists slipped from 296/5 to 304/7, and Bangladesh now find themselves in the driving seat to script history.

17:06 (IST) May 19

Taijul and Nahid turn the screws on - Pakistan still had a herculean task ahead coming into the afternoon session. Babar and Masood batted nicely in the first half hour or so and kept scoring at a good clip. However, it was Taijul Islam who broke the 92-run stand for the third wicket by fishing out Babar, who looked in pristine touch. From that moment, Bangladesh wrestled back control, sending Pakistan tumbling from 133/2 to 162/5, with the well-set Masood also falling for a fine fifty. Salman Agha and Rizwan then took it upon themselves to bat out the session, weathering testing spells from Nahid Rana and Taijul to see Pakistan through to 200/5 at the break.

17:05 (IST) May 19

Babar and Masood steady Pakistan - Mehidy was in action in the morning, snaffling a stunning gully catch to end Abdullah Fazal's patient vigil before trapping Azan Awais in front with a crafty in-drifter. Pakistan were under pressure, being pushed to rebuild. But Masood and Babar came together and steadied things up pretty well. With no demons as such on the pitch, the two looked proactive, feasting on anything loose, as they peppered the fence with a string of crisp boundaries to see the session through. Nahid Rana bowled a superb spell with control and was supported by the two spinners, who bowled consistently on tight lines.

Well, there it is. The umpires take the reading and have come to a conclusion that the artificial light has taken over the natural light. So the conditions are not favourable enough to continue. The players walk off the field, and that will be STUMPS on Day 4 due to bad light. Nonetheless, it has been a gripping day of Test cricket overall. Bangladesh have the upper hand, but Pakistan have displayed a tough fight to stay afloat. Although they are hanging on a cliff right now, with just three wickets in hand.
