India's First Model Border Village In Ladakh: Can Chumur Strengthen India's China Frontier?

At 16,700 feet above sea level and close to the Line of Actual Control with China, the remote Ladakh village of Chumur is set to become India's first Model Border Village under the Vibrant Village Programme. Home to just 91 residents and 24 households, the project aims to provide climate-resilient housing, tourism opportunities and sustainable livelihoods to strengthen habitation in frontier regions. Beyond development, the initiative reflects a broader strategic shift—recognising that populated and economically viable border communities are an important component of long-term border security.
