Modi, accompanied by Abe, will travel to Kobe by the famed Shinkansen bullet train, the technology that will be deployed for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high speed railway. He will also visit the Kawasaki Heavy Industries facility in Kobe, where high speed trains are manufactured.

The remarks that came in the backdrop of heightened tensions with Pakistan, created a flutter at a time when PM Narendra Modi is in Japan for a summit with his counterpart Shinzo Abe. Japan, of course, has had long-standing concerns about India not being a signatory to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.

En route to Japan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday made a surprise stopover in the Thai capital where he paid respects to revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who died last month after a protracted illness.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a three-day visit to Japan from today during which the two countries are expected to sign a civil nuclear deal besides discussing ways to step up cooperation in the areas like trade, investment and security.
