After being vilified for it, the RBI, in a huge U-turn today, withdrew its rule issued Monday that barred deposits of Rs 5,000 and higher of old notes in KYC-compliant accounts. The Centre and the RBI had been massively criticized for Monday's rule change, even by people who broadly supported demonetisation, which took place on November 8.

"The Union Cabinet today approved the ordinance route to amend the Payment of Wages Act, 1936, to allow employers of certain industries to make payment through the electronic mode and cheques," a source said. Employers will also have the option to pay wages in cash, the source added.

The government's email address for black money tipoffs+ has been flooded with 4,000 messages since Friday, when blackmoneyinfo@incometax. gov.in was made public. "We are getting a good response," a finance ministry official told ET. That's in addition to vast amounts of data flowing to tax authorities and other investigative agencies on a daily basis about deposits in bank accounts and other undeclared income through the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), part of the finance ministry.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested an exporter on Monday and seized more than 40 kg of gold allegedly meant to facilitate illegal exchange of the demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 banknotes.Worth over Rs 12 crore, the gold was recovered from various places in Delhi. The exporter operated out of the Noida Special Economic Zone (NSEZ), from where he is alleged to have diverted gold meant for export into the domestic market.

An RTI query has revealed that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) only had around Rs 4.95 lakh crore in the new Rs 2,000 notes when the demonetisation decision was announced. An estimated Rs 15.44 lakh crore was in circulation in the old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes on November 8.

The government and RBI on Monday unveiled fresh restrictions on deposit of old 500 and 1,000 rupee notes, saying anyone depositing above Rs 5,000 will be questioned "on record, in the presence of at least two officials of the bank, as to why this could not be deposited earlier" and only after a "satisfactory explanation" will the money be deposited. This flies in the face of the government repeatedly urging the public that since the deadline for making deposits of old notes was December 30, they had ample time and should not rush to bank branches and add to queues.

Four employees of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in Bengaluru, including a manager-level official, are under the scanner of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for allegedly helping a senior minister in the Karnataka government to exchange his unaccounted demonetised notes.

"We are still verifying the authenticity of the complaint since they have named a senior RBI official in Bengaluru. If it is genuine, we will act on them," CBI sources told TOI on Sunday.
