Republic Day long weekend: 5 national parks for Big Cat sightings

A traveller always has a reason to travel. Likewise, the Republic Day long weekend is round the corner and if it has you craving a quick escape into the wild, India has more options that one can imagine. And some national parks offer some of the best chances in the world to spot big cats in their natural habitat. There are tiger reserves in central India, a national park that’s the only home of Asiatic lions, and more that combine thrilling safaris with landscapes at their seasonal best in January.

2/6

Ranthambore National Park

Ranthambore, of course, needs no introduction. Among the most coveted Tiger Reserves in the country, the striking landscapes of ancient ruins and deciduous woods make up a jungle backdrop that metropolitan cities lack. And it's true indeed that even if you fail to see tigers here, the trip for the above reasons shall be worth it. However, as far as the sighting of the majestic Bengal Tiger is concerned, January is a really good month since the climate is pleasant and the possibilities of its sighting are enhanced in the waterlogged areas.

3/6

Bandhavgarh National Park

Reasons abound why Bandhavgarh in Madhya Pradesh remains among the best places in India for tiger spotting. This place features a high density of the big cats. The compact size of the park works in favour of wildlife enthusiasts, who don't want to miss any chances of tiger sighting. Safaris during January often reveal tigers basking in the winter sun or moving along forest tracks early in the morning. Also, the mix of sal forests, grasslands, and rocky hills makes this place apt for varied safari experiences across its different zones.

4/6

Kanha National Park

Kanha National Park Pack a bag and experience the limitless world of the forest. Kanha, known as a national park with grasslands and dense sal forests, houses a full population of tigers and other animals like leopards and the famous barasingha. The wintry mornings of January are mostly misty with a charm of their own; the afternoons are filled with bright sunshine – apt weather for animals to step out in the wild. The well-organized safari lines and diverse topography of Kanha make it one of the fascinating places to visit even during a weekend holiday.

5/6

Kaziranga National Park

Although the one-horned rhino is the global icon of Kaziranga, the park also boasts one of the largest tiger populations in the world. Situated in Assam, its vast grasslands and wetlands offer a completely different safari experience from that of central India. January is one of the best times to visit, as the floodwaters recede and wildlife becomes more visible. Spotting a tiger here often feels like an added bonus, alongside sightings of elephants, swamp deer and a vibrant array of birdlife.

6/6

Gir National Park

The only place on Earth where Asiatic lions roam freely in the wild is Gujarat’s Gir National Park. A Republic Day long weekend here gives a rare chance to spot these magnificent big cats amidst the park's dry forests and scrublands. The winter weather of January is perfect for safaris, as the cooler temperatures add to comfort and better visibility. The lions in Gir are often spotted resting in open clearings or near any waterhole, with more common sightings compared to many other big-cat reserves.
