India’s two favourite mini Switzerlands: North’s Khajjiar vs. South’s Munnar

India has some homegrown contenders that can give tough competition to the Swiss Alps. This means if you haven't been to Switzerland yet, you can opt to save yourself from the pain of visa hassles, and check out what your country has on offer first. Up north, nestled in Himachal Pradesh, is Khajjiar, a meadowy wonder straight out of a postcard, whereas down south, among Kerala’s rolling tea plantations, is Munnar, which is another dreamy escape that feels like a slice of Europe. But if you had to pick one, which side of India wears the Swiss crown better? Let’s find out.

2/8

First impressions: Meadows vs. tea slopes

Khajjiar is a place that is almost covered with its vast emerald meadow, pine forests, and a tiny lake in the middle, which seems almost like a scene cut from the Swiss countryside. Munnar, on the other hand, spreads itself across misty slopes and comes blanketed in tea gardens, with valleys that roll endlessly like green velvet. While Khajjiar’s beauty is compact and picture-perfect, Munnar’s shows off its drama in its sweeping, cinematic scale.

3/8

Altitude argument

If Switzerland means crisp mountain air, Khajjiar isn't the one to lag behind. Sitting at nearly 2,000 m above sea level, it carries that Himalayan chill, complete with snow-dusted peaks visible on a clear day. Meanwhile, Munnar sits lower at around 1,500 m, but trades in snow for soothing mist. It’s not the Alps, but it’s the Western Ghats at their most magical.

4/8

Adventure calling

Khajjiar isn't always about pretty things. It dares you to go trekking through deodar forests, ride horses on the meadow, or paraglide against mountain backdrops. Munnar, by contrast, is a hiker’s paradise, where trails cut through tea estates, spice plantations, and cloud-kissed peaks like Anamudi, South India’s highest. You can think of them as playful Swiss places, where one serves as a beautiful picnic spot, while the other in the South is Switzerland with hiking boots.

5/8

Wildlife encounters

Who knew Switzerland could come with elephants and tigers? In Munnar, Eravikulam National Park offers sightings of the endangered Nilgiri tahr, and nearby reserves give you a chance to spot elephants or even big cats. Khajjiar, surrounded by Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary, is quieter but hides Himalayan flora and fauna for those willing to wander off the touristy track.

6/8

Foodie fix

Khajjiar keeps things simple with Himachali delights, like rajma-chawal, siddu, or steaming momos by the meadow. It’s hearty mountain fare. Munnar, in contrast, layers its Swiss vibe with Kerala’s spice-rich cuisine, pepper chicken, appam with stew, and cardamom tea fresh from the plantations. If you equate Switzerland with chocolates, Munnar will serve you cardamom and tea that will spoil you for life.

7/8

The crowd factor

Khajjiar is often called “Mini Switzerland” by locals and tourists alike, so the meadow can get busy, especially in summer. Munnar, though famous, still offers more ways to slip away into solitude—the farther you wander into the plantations, the more private it feels. So if your Switzerland fantasy involves solitude, Munnar edges ahead.

8/8

The Swiss Crown

So, who wins? If you want alpine meadows and pines without leaving the Himalayas, Khajjiar nails the Swiss postcard look. If your idea of Switzerland is endless green slopes, mist, and European-style cool but with a South Indian soul, Munnar takes the crown.
Maybe the truth is simpler: you don’t need to choose. India has two Switzerlands, one tucked in the North, one brewed fresh in the South. Why not visit both, one at a time?
