The New Year celebrations of Hong Kong are globally famous for their magnificent fireworks. However this year the celebrations were a little different, but no less spectacular. In 2026, the city decided to give up on the traditional fireworks and begin 2026 on a musical note. The New Year was welcomed with a grand music concert.
The city’s tourism board organized a live music show on Wednesday night featuring the soft rock duo Air Supply and several local performers in Central, the bustling business district that also houses the popular nightlife area Lan Kwai Fong. As the clock struck midnight, eight landmark buildings across the city transformed into giant countdown timers, culminating in a synchronized three-minute light show.
For decades, fireworks have been the centerpiece of Hong Kong’s festivities- from New Year’s Eve to Lunar New Year and National Day, drawing hundreds of thousands of locals and tourists to the harbor front. This year’s musical celebration offered a fresh, more intimate way to welcome 2026 while still highlighting Hong Kong’s vibrant city spirit.
