8 countries that span the most time zones and why it’s not just about size

Who rules the world’s clocks? You might assume countries with mammoth size would. But here’s a surprise: France takes the time zone crown, all thanks to its far-flung overseas territories. It’s less about square kilometers and more about colonial footprints and globe-hopping geography. While Russia spans a continent, France jumps hemispheres. Here, we have compiled a list, based on data from Timeanddate, which includes all official standard time zones in use, overseas outposts included. Daylight saving time and Antarctic claims have been, however, left out. Turns out, when it comes to time, history and borders play a major role than you’d expect. (Canva)

Versailles, France

France may be compact in size in Europe, but when it comes to global footprint, think again. With territories stretching across the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian Ocean, and South America, it clocks in with a whopping 12 official time zones, the most of any nation. From French Polynesia (UTC−10) to Wallis and Futuna (UTC+12), France’s far-flung lands keep the sun rising and setting on French time nearly around the clock. (Canva)

Russia: 11 Time Zones

Stretching across a jaw-dropping 6.6 million square miles, Russia spans 11 time zones. It stretches across the time zones, from UTC+2 in Kaliningrad to UTC+12 in Kamchatka, all within Russia’s vast, uninterrupted mainland. (Canva)

The United States: 11 Time Zones

Though the US began as a colony, it didn’t quite become a traditional colonial empire, many of its current territories, like Puerto Rico, Guam, and Hawaii, were already inhabited before being annexed. Its time zones span from the remote Pacific outposts of Baker and Howland Islands (UTC−12:00) to Wake Island (UTC+12:00). The contiguous US spans four zones, with Alaska and Hawaii each adding one more. In total, with five time zones in the Pacific, five across mainland America, and one in the Caribbean, the US clocks in at 11 distinct time zones. (Canva)

United Kingdom: 9 Time Zones

Britain may sit comfortably at UTC+0, but its global reach tells a different story. From the Pitcairn Islands in the Pacific (UTC−8) to the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean (UTC+6), the UK’s overseas territories stretch far and wide, giving it a grand total of nine time zones. (Canva)

6/9

Australia: 9 Time Zones

Timekeeping in Australia is anything but straightforward. While the mainland already juggles multiple zones, including half-hour and 45-minute offsets, the inclusion of distant territories like Christmas Island, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, and Lord Howe Island bumps the total up to nine official time zones. 7/9

Canada: 6 Time Zones

Canada spans six time zones, from UTC−8 in British Columbia and Yukon to UTC−3.5 in Newfoundland. While most regions observe daylight saving time, some, like Blanc-Sablon, stick to a fixed schedule year-round. The mix of time shifts and vast geography keeps Canada’s clocks interesting coast to coast. (Canva)

8/9

New Zealand: 5 Time Zones

Mainland New Zealand runs on UTC+12, but its timekeeping gets more interesting beyond its shores. The Chatham Islands follow their own unique UTC+12:45, while associated states like Niue and the Cook Islands sit in the UTC−11 range. Altogether, New Zealand stretches across five time zones, a tiny nation with a big global tick. (Canva)

9/9

Denmark: 5 Time Zones

Denmark may be compact in Europe, but its time zone footprint is surprisingly wide. With the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic and several distinct zones across Greenland’s icy expanse, Denmark clocks in with five official time zones, proof that size isn’t everything when it comes to keeping time.
