Judging a book by its cover is an age-old debate – but now, it almost feels inevitable. With specially designed covers and movie tie-in editions, admiration often wins over judgment. At the recently-held New Delhi World Book Fair 2026, readers flocked to stalls to explore books as much for their covers as their content. Many special editions featured exclusive chapters, stickers, and collectible covers to die for.
'Special editions create a stronger reader connection; they can also serve as aesthetic showpieces'Ayushi Pandey, a student from Gurgaon who attended the book fair, said, "Special editions offer an extra sense of value because not everyone has access to them. They create a stronger emotional connection. They can also act as showpieces when the focus is on aesthetics – the foiled covers, sprayed edges, slipcases – I feel these are meant to be admired rather than heavily used."
Clothbound books command attention even before they are opened. "Book covers can help enhance the reading experience. With clothbound classics, I feel transported to the era when there were no paperbacks, and the immersive experience helps while reading classics," said Zoha Ather, 23, a social worker.

Appeal of art-led book editionsMadiha Tariq Shafiq, 25, insists that special editions of fantasy novels look especially pretty on her shelf, particularly those with painted edges that make the covers pop. She explained, “Some special editions have so much detail in the foiling or the sprayed edges that after you read the book, you go back and admire the art,” adding, “Some editions include character art, and that brings the characters to life. I have One For My Enemy by Olivie Blake, and whenever I think of the book, my mind conjures a visual of the last character art – it holds so much significance to the story.”

'Merchandise like totes and game cards add an extra edge to the books'Beyond the pages, books now come with a little extra flair. "Things like tote bags and bookmarks usually come complimentary with the books, but they give a book that extra edge. Readers love that bookish aesthetic – in fact, many have even asked if they can buy the tote bags separately!" said Radhika Raje, marketing manager at a publishing house. She added, "For children, we also have themed merchandise like secret pens for our Investigator series and Gruffalo pins. But it’s not just for kids – adults enjoy them too." Madiha noted that fantasy merch like game cards, swords, daggers, crowns, and bookends aren’t readily available in India, and she looks forward to seeing them at book fairs.
