What is the Raksha Sutra mantra? And why it should be recited while tying Rakhi

Every year, on the day of Raksha Bandhan, sisters throughout India tie a bright thread, or rakhi, on the wrists of their brothers. A sweet tradition, celebrated with smiles, affection, sweets, and the lifelong promise of protection. But beneath the smiles and celebration, there is a deeper spirituality, one that no one ever, and perhaps hardly ever, talks about — the recitation of the Raksha Sutra Mantra. In 2025, Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated on August 9, 2025 (Saturday)

The mantra and what it means:

Raksha Sutra Mantra is a Vedic prayer. It is usually said by a priest or by the sister when she ties the rakhi. The mantra is:
ॐ येन बद्धो बली राजा दानवेन्द्रो महाबल
तेन त्वां प्रतिबध्नामि रक्षे मा चल मा चल॥
Transliteration: "Om yena baddho Bali raja danavendro mahabalah,
tena tvam prati-badhnami raksha ma chala ma chala"
The mantra is all about the myth of King Bali, the powerful demon king renowned for his power and faithfulness. It is said that Lord Vishnu tied a sacred string on Bali's wrist at a ritual ceremony to safeguard and bless him. The mantra goes like this:

"I tie this sacred thread on you, just as it was tied to the mighty King Bali. May it protect you always and never come undone."

A bond beyond the physical

Though Raksha Bandhan may be called an emotional festival between the sister and the brother, the chanting of mantras lends it an added meaning. It is not just a symbol of love in the form of a thread, it is a shield, charged with divine power through the vibrations of spiritual mantras. It turns the rakhi into a raksha sutra, a protective thread - in a true sense.

Why does it matter?

Reciting the mantra while tying rakhi is more than a ritualistic chant. It is a sincere prayer that the wearer is always protected from harm — bodily, yes, but soulfully and mentally too. It imparts an ancient energy of protection, strength, and divine benediction to the wearer's life.
When the world is running towards worldly pleasures and expensive gifts, rituals are almost sidelined. But, if we pause, take a moment, and reflect on the significance of this whole ritual, we might realise that it is so much more. The Raksha Sutra Mantra reminds all of us that this festival is not just about sharing sweets and blessings but also about seeking protection from the divine, honoring age-old traditions and celebrating the pious relationship between a brother and a sister.
