Tips on dealing with a dramatic sister-in-law

If you are someone completely subtle, demure and calm while your sister-in-law loves to be dramatic in life then it can be overwhelming at times. But if she is crossing a line and making you uncomfortable then here are some tips that may help you handle such a sister-in-law.

2/6

Don’t get involved

Let her vent out, curse and yell, do all that drama but do not engage yourself into the same. Don’t let it enter your head, and let her say because that is her habit. She wants the limelight? Let her be in it. Don’t let her provoke you. Try to slip out of the room or house or say it out loud that you will be back when she calms down and leave. If she is at your place then you can ask her to leave by making excuses like you have a doctor’s appointment or not feeling well etc.

3/6

Control your reaction

Some people have the habit and they deliberately try to push your buttons. They know your weakness and take advantage of it. Don’t be silent for she can go on and on, don’t lose it as that will give her an edge. Don’t defend yourself because then you are showing that you care and are letting her words bite you. Be careful with your words and try to understand her point of view.

4/6

Boundaries

This is crucial in all relationships. Sit down with her and calmly tell her the points where you feel she oversteps. Just be polite with a little firmness. Don’t get emotional. Be clear with your facts and don’t make her feel cornered. Draw those boundaries but with a cool head. This also includes drawing the line on social media networking. Ignore her request and subtly mention in some conversation that you are not active on whichever medium. Oh and do make your settings private on the accounts.

5/6

Discuss with your partner

Instead of venting out your anger on your partner, talk to him/her about what issues you are facing with your sister-in-law. There may be something he/she can do or even give you a better insight on why she is the way she is.

6/6

The texting

If she is dramatic even with her texting and it gets harrowing for you then just do not respond. Don’t give into your anger and answer only when calm.
