8 foods that should never be paired with milk

Foods that should never be paired with milk

Milk is a staple in many diets worldwide, celebrated for its rich nutritional content, including calcium, protein, and essential vitamins. However, its unique properties mean it doesn't always pair well with certain foods. Combining milk with some ingredients can cause digestive discomfort, reduce nutrient absorption, or even lead to long-term health issues. Here are eight foods you should avoid pairing with milk. 2/10

Citrus Fruits

Oranges, lemons, and grapefruits are acidic, hence they cause curdling in milk and indigestion, and bloating. Their acidity reacts with the proteins of milk causing it to coagulate in the stomach which can lead to discomfort in the digestive system.

3/10

Bananas

While bananas and milk are a common combination in smoothies, Ayurveda believes that this combination slows down digestion and creates toxins in the body. It may cause heaviness and discomfort for those with sensitive stomachs.

4/10

Fish

Fish and milk is one of the most avoided mixtures in ancient culinary traditions. In some societies, people believe that consuming these two leads to vitiligo. Scientifically, it might be too rich for the stomach, thereby causing digestive problems.

5/10

Melons

Hydrating melons include watermelon, cantaloupe, and muskmelon. But milk tends to ferment in the stomach when taken with melons, and this causes gas and bloating. The heavy digestion of milk is incompatible with the fast rate at which melons digest, creating digestive chaos.

6/10

Sour Foods

Foods such as pickles, yoghurt, or sour cream can curdle milk and affect the digestion process. The acidic nature of these foods will clash with the alkaline nature of milk, which might cause acidity and discomfort.

7/10

Salted Snacks or Foods

Salt and milk are mostly incompatible. Milk mixed with salty foods such as chips, namkeen, or even salty porridge can obstruct digestion and may lead to bloating. Ayurveda advises against mixing milk and salt as they have opposite energies or virya.

8/10

Eggs

For some, eggs and milk can be hard to digest. It is not that it would cause harm, but the protein content of both might overwhelm the stomach, especially if someone has weak digestion.

9/10

Spicy Foods

Spicy foods and milk do not go well with each other because of the conflicting effects they cause on the digestive system. The heat and acidity are caused by spicy ingredients, whereas the cooling and heavy effects of milk cause discomfort, acid reflux, or an upset stomach.

10/10

The bottom line

Milk is a healthy beverage, but its specific characteristics mean it cannot be combined with everything. Avoiding such combinations will ensure you have better digestive health and avoid unnecessary discomfort. Remember to drink milk alone or with foods that can be consumed with milk such as nuts, dates, or whole grains for a balanced wholesome diet.
