NEW DELHI: The Centre has appointed
Vivek Joshi, an 1989 batch IAS officer from
Haryana cadre, as the new
Registrar General
and Census Commissioner of India. He replaces incumbent Sailesh, who was named as RGI and Census Commissioner in January 2018 and had been holding additional charge of the post even after he was appointed as secretary, department of official language under the home ministry, in May 2018.
Joshi joins as RGI at a time when National Register of Citizens is being updated in
Assam. The process of settlement of claims and objections is set to be taken up over the next few months. The deadline for completion of NRC updation process was in December extended by six months to June 30, 2019.
Another key responsibility that Joshi would be focusing on is preparation for the next decennial census exercise. The questionnaire for the same is currently being finalized in consultation with various Central ministries and departments.
Joshi is likely to join as RGI and Census Commissioner on Monday.
