The demons of the Perth track seemed to vanish for India but returned to haunt Australia in the opening Test. After a chaotic Day 1 that saw 17 wickets fall, it seemed inevitable that the Border-Gavaskar series opener might not even last three days. However, India defied expectations, piling on a colossal 487/6 declared and setting an imposing 534-run target for the hosts on Day 3.

After setting an enormous target, India had 27 minutes to unleash their bowlers on Australia, and Jasprit Bumrah made an immediate impact, breathing fire and tearing through the Australian top order.

At stumps, Australia were reeling at 12/3, staring at a monumental task to save the game. India now look poised to secure a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Former India captain Virat Kohli hit his much-awaited first hundred of the year across formats on Day 3 of the first Test against Australia in Perth on Sunday.

By scoring his 30th hundred in Test cricket, Virat not only roared back to form but also broke a string of records and most importantly, broke the record of his idol Sachin Tendulkar.

Former batting great Tendulkar had scored six Test hundreds over the years in Australia and Kohli hit his seventh Test century in Australia as India declared their second innings at 487/6 to set Australia a 534-run target.

India dominated Day 3 of the Perth Test against Australia, setting an imposing 534-run target after declaring their second innings at 487/6. Yashasvi Jaiswal showcased his brilliance with a sublime 161, supported by KL Rahul's 77 in a record-breaking 201-run opening partnership, the highest by an Indian pair in Australia. Jaiswal, in his 15th Test, displayed maturity and flair, hitting 15 boundaries and three sixes before falling to Mitchell Marsh.

Virat Kohli roared back to form, scoring an unbeaten 100, his first Test century in over a year. Kohli’s innings silenced critics, cementing his reputation with a stellar record in Australia, where he now has seven Test centuries. Australia's bowlers struck in the second session but failed to halt India’s momentum.

Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj then dismantled Australia's top order late in the day, reducing them to 12/3 at stumps. Victory looms for India as Australia face an uphill battle.

It's stumps on Day 3, and Australia are struggling at 12 for 3 in chase of a 534-run target. Jasprit Bumrah ends the day with his second wicket, trapping Marnus Labuschagne LBW off the last ball of the day.

Bumrah returned figures of 2 for 1 in 2.2 overs. Australia lost three wickets in just 4.2 overs of their second innings. Mohammed Siraj also among wickets and finished the day with figures of 1 for 7.

A couple of boundaries added to India's total off Pat Cummins. The Australian skipper went for a bouncer and it went over the keeper for four byes. Next Cummins pulls one back into Virat Kohli, and finds a thick inside edge. But it also goes over the stumps for a four towards fine leg. Valuable runs for India.

84 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in 26 overs in the session. India lost quick wickets in the middle of the session on Day 3, but still managed to add quite a good amount of runs in their total. The lead is over 400 runs for India now, which will give them big confidence in the contest.

Australia need to wrap up the innings soon, otherwise the lead is swelling well beyond there reach at the moment.

Virat Kohli (40 not out) and Washington Sundar (14 not out) have so far added 38 runs for the sixth wicket to push India's lead further away from Australia.

Physio rushes in to check the fellow, he looks okay to continue. Nathan Lyon also comes in to check if he is okay. Kohli looks in good touch now.

A mini collapse is happening in the middle for India. Dhruv Jurel took the review against the LBW decision, but lost it on 'umpire's call'. The ball was clipping the leg stump. India kept the review, but lost the wicket. Pat Cummins with his first wicket of the innings.

India now lost three wickets in quick succession for 8 runs.

Oh No! First ball after the drinks break and Rishabh Pant charges out against Nathan Lyon. The Australian spinner anticipated it well and fired a wide delivery. Alex Carey does the rest, stumping Pant out for 1. India lost two wickets in quick succession. And Lyon gets his first wicket of the game.

45 runs for the loss of 2 wickets in the first hour of the second session today. Josh Hazlewood started the second session with the wicket of Devdutt Padikkal off the first ball after the break. But Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli steadied the ship with a 38-run stand for the third wicket, before the centurion Jaiswal was caught at backward point by Steve Smith.

Jaiswal completed his 150 in it, falling for 161. It was his fourth 150-plus score for the youngster in Tests. In fact, all his Test centuries are big 150-plus scores.

After enduring nine dot balls, Virat Kohli got off the mark with a single off Josh Hazlewood. And in the next over, he drives it down the ground for a three off Mitchell Starc.

What a start for Australia. First ball after the long break, and Josh Hazlewood gets his first wicket. Perfect start for Australia. Umpires check for a fair catch, but that was a clean catch. It goes right into the hands of Steve Smith at second slip with his fingers under the ball. A good length ball angled in around off, Devdutt Padikkal (25) gets forward to defend but the ball straightens and takes the outside edge.
