Adv. Senapathy Venu of Congress secures a decisive victory in Udumbanchola, polling nearly 65,000 votes and defeating CPI(M)’s K.K. Jayachandran by a margin of over 20,000 votes, reflecting a strong mandate.
Udumbanchola Assembly constituency, numbered 89, is located in Idukki district of Kerala and forms part of the Idukki parliamentary constituency.
Established in 1965 and redefined during the 2008 delimitation, it covers Udumbanchola taluk including Nedumkandam town, panchayats like Pampadumpara, Rajakkad, Santhanpara, Vandanmedu, and high-range areas with around 167,000 electors.
This general seat thrives on cardamom-rubber plantations, small-scale farming, eco-tourism amid misty hills, and diverse communities including settlers and tribals in the Western Ghats' rugged terrain near Mathikettan Shola National Park.
CPI(M) of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) has a firm grip since 2011, with M.M. Mani as the current MLA and a long-time incumbent. In 2021, he secured a massive 69,756 votes (55.66per cent) against UDF's Saji Varghese (31,451 votes), winning by 38,305 votes (30.58per cent) at 75.56per cent turnout—his biggest margin yet, up from a slim 1,109-vote edge in 2016 over Dean Kuriakose. LDF's dominance draws from labor unions, farmer support, and Christian voters, fending off UDF and BJP's 5-6per cent shares.
Key issues include crop failures from erratic weather, landslides blocking ghat roads, youth outmigration despite remittances, water shortages in summer, quarrying impacts on ecology, poor healthcare access in remote hamlets, and demands for irrigation upgrades, schools, and sustainable tourism jobs amid climate vulnerabilities. These challenges reinforce LDF's organizational strength in this highland stronghold.
