Congress candidate Deepak Joy secures a commanding victory in Thripunithura, defeating CPI(M)’s K.N. Unnikrishnan with a strong margin of over 18,000 votes.
Thripunithura Assembly constituency, numbered 81, is located in Ernakulam district of Kerala and falls under the Ernakulam parliamentary constituency.
Established in 1957 and redefined in the 2008 delimitation, it includes Thripunithura municipality, nearby panchayats like Udayamperoor and Vazhakkulam, and parts of the historic Hill Palace area, with around 170,000 electors. This general seat blends royal heritage, residential suburbs, and semi-urban growth near Kochi, supporting a mix of middle-class families, small businesses, and cultural tourism tied to temple festivals.
The
Indian National Congress (INC) of the United Democratic Front (UDF) dominates, with K. Babu as the current MLA since reclaiming the seat in 2021 after losing it to CPI(M)'s M. Swaraj in 2016. Babu won narrowly with 65,875 votes (42.14per cent share), defeating Swaraj's 64,883 votes by just 992 votes at 73.11per cent turnout—his closest margin yet, following stronger victories like 15,778 in 2011.
INC held it through the 2000s, though LDF won sporadically earlier. Key issues include urban flooding and drainage woes during monsoons, traffic congestion on roads to Kochi, water scarcity despite reservoirs, preservation of heritage sites like Hill Palace amid development pressures, youth unemployment despite IT proximity, and demands for better public transport, healthcare upgrades, and festival infrastructure.
These local concerns, alongside competitive UDF-LDF rivalry amplified by BJP's rising 15per cent share, keep the seat a bellwether for Ernakulam's shifting dynamics.
