THAVANUR: In Thavanur, Kerala, the result has been declared. Congress candidate Adv. V S Joy has won the seat, polling 79,661 votes and securing a margin of 14,647 over Independent candidate Dr. K T Jaleel, who finished with 65,014 votes. Joy, 40, holds a graduate professional degree and clinches the Thavanur Assembly constituency for Congress in a decisive finish.
Tucked into Kerala's Malappuram district, the Thavanur Assembly constituency slots in as the 47th among the state's 140 legislative seats, under the Ponnani Lok Sabha constituency.
This general seat draws over 200,000 voters from a diverse mix of communities, with turnout levels around 74–75 per cent.
It spans Thavanur grama panchayat and surrounding rural pockets along the Bharathapuzha riverbanks in north Kerala.
In the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections, Independent Dr. K T Jaleel secured 70,358 votes at 46.46 per cent, narrowly defeating INC’s Firoz Kunnumparambil, who polled 67,794 votes (44.77 per cent), by a margin of 2,564 votes. The 2016 result also saw Jaleel winning with 68,179 votes, ahead of Congress candidate Ifthiquarudheen Master, highlighting the constituency’s competitive nature.
Heading into 2026, Thavanur continues to reflect closely fought contests shaped by local issues, riverine concerns, and shifting voter preferences, keeping it a key seat in north Kerala’s electoral landscape.
