NEW DELHI: In Assam's Tamulpur, BJP's Biswajit Daimary won with a margin of 26,743 votes against United People Party (Liberal) candidate Pramod Boro. Congress' Rafie Daimary ended at third position.
Exit polls had suggested a decisive edge for the incumbent government led by
Himanta Biswa Sarma, with most agencies predicting that the Bharatiya Janata Party is on course to win a third straight term in Assam.
Voting for all 126 constituencies took place on April 9, with turnout exceeding 85%—among the highest seen in recent years.
Importantly, the strong voter participation was evident not only in rural regions but also in urban areas, indicating widespread and energetic engagement from voters across the state.
Tamulpur (ST) is one of the 126 assembly constituencies in Assam. It is located in the newly formed Tamulpur district within the Nalbari parliamentary area. It features a largely rural, tribal-influenced demographic with significant Bodo and other indigenous communities.
In the 2021 Assam Assembly elections, Jolen Daimary of the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) won decisively with a margin of 57,059 votes over independent candidate Ganesh Kachary. Key contenders included BPF's Ramdas Basumatary and UPPL's Leho Ram Boro, reflecting Bodo political dynamics.
The area covers parts of Tamulpur district, emphasizing plains tribes and Scheduled Tribes populations. It includes remote villages with agriculture and forest-based livelihoods, and voter turnout has historically been strong, often above 80per cent in recent polls.
