SC agrees to hear Ashoka University associate professor's plea against arrest today or tomorrow

NEW DELHI: Supreme Court Monday agreed to list on Tuesday or Wednesday a petition challenging Ashoka University associate professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad's arrest by Haryana Police for his posts on Operation Sindoor. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal had requested a bench of CJI B R Gavai and Justice A G Masih for an urgent hearing, saying the professor was being prosecuted for his "patriotic statements".

Mahmudabad was picked up by police, who have lodged two FIRs against him based on complaints by Renu Bhatia, chairperson of Haryana State Commission for Women, and Yogesh Jatheri, sarpanch of Jatheri village and a general secretary of BJP's Yuva Morcha. They alleged that the professor had disparaged women officers and attempted to fan communal disharmony.
