NEW DELHI: In the 2026 assembly elections, TVK's Sivakumar K emerged as the winner of Salem (North) constituency, beating DMK candidate Rajendran R by a margin of 14,034 votes.
Sivakumar K secured 85,710 votes while Rajendran R stood second in the race with 71,676 votes.
Salem (North) Assembly constituency is located in Salem district of Tamil Nadu and forms part of the Salem Lok Sabha constituency. The seat represents an urban segment of the Salem city region and witnessed contests involving the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), and regional parties such as the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), reflecting the shifting political alliances in the area.
In the 2016 Assembly elections, the constituency had 2,65,999 electors, with 1,91,820 valid votes polled. DMK candidate Rajendran R secured victory with 86,583 votes, defeating AIADMK candidate Saravanan K R S, who received 76,710 votes. The margin of victory stood at 9,873 votes, marking a notable win for the DMK in the constituency.
Earlier, in the 2011 Assembly elections, Salem (North) had 2,19,327 electors, with 1,63,356 valid votes recorded. Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) candidate Alagapuram R Mohanraj won the seat with 88,956 votes, defeating Indian National Congress candidate Jayaprakash G, who secured 59,591 votes. The victory margin stood at 29,365 votes, reflecting the influence of regional parties in that election cycle.
The results across these two elections indicate a competitive political landscape, with different parties securing victories at different times, highlighting the role of alliances and shifting voter preferences in Salem (North).
