One of the alleged murder victims, Ranjit Singh, a Dera follower , was shot dead on July 10, 2002, in his fields in Khanpur Kolian in Kurukshetra, Haryana. His father Joginder Singh claimed his son was murdered because the Dera chief suspected the latter was behind the circulation of an anonymous letter by a sadhvi alleging sexual exploitation. Joginder accused Jasbir Singh and Sabdil Singh, gunmen of the baba, for the crime. This case is being tried in the CBI court, Ambala.
The other alleged murder victim was journalist Ram Chander Chhatarpati, who ran a newspaper named Poora Sach.
According to statements given to the CBI by Chhatarpati’s younger son, Aridaman, his father published exposés about the activities of the Dera baba in the newspaper. In May 2002, Chhatarpati published a news item on the anonymous complaint by a sadhvi alleging physical abuse. Almost immediately after this, he received threats over the phone from the Dera. He was shot at on October 24, 2002 at his Sirsa residence by Kuldeep Singh and Nirmal Singh, carpenters at the Dera. Charges were leveled against the Dera chief and other accused by the CBI court, Ambala last year.
