Medinipur (GEN), Assembly Constituency No. 236, is centred on Midnapore town, the historic district headquarters of Paschim Medinipur in South Bengal. Lying along the Kangsabati (Kasai) river, the constituency is semi-urban in character, encompassing Medinipur municipality and adjacent blocks, with 266,000+ electors from diverse backgrounds including middle-class government employees, traders, students, and rural agrarian communities.Midnapore carries deep historical significance as a hub of Bengal's freedom movement.
Key voter issues include urban civic infrastructure (roads, drainage, street lighting), local governance, youth unemployment, healthcare quality at Medinipur Medical College, and academic concerns. Political violence has been a recurring local issue. Historically a CPI(M) hold that transitioned to TMC post-2011. In 2021, a bipolar TMC-BJP contest under high turnout (88.1per cent) saw TMC's June Maliah—an incumbent minister—win by 24,397 votes (~10.4per cent margin from 234,970 total votes), overcoming a significant BJP urban challenge. The comfortable margin reflects TMC's urban consolidation. A safe-to-comfortable TMC seat with political significance as the district headquarters constituency; its result strongly influences the overall narrative of Paschim Medinipur's TMC performance under Medinipur Lok Sabha.
