Lakhimpur constituency assembly elections 2026: BJP's Manab Deka wins against Congress’s Ghana Buragohain

The Lakhimpur constituency in Assam witnessed a high-octane fight between BJP’s Manab Deka and Congress’s Ghana Buragohain. Deka won by a margin of over 32,000 votes after securing a total of 85,726 votes.

Multiple exit polls have projected a comfortable victory for the BJP-led alliance, likely ensuring another term for chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Elections across all 126 constituencies were held on April 9, with turnout surpassing 85%.

High levels of participation were recorded across both rural and urban areas, reflecting strong voter engagement throughout the state.

Lakhimpur is an assembly constituency in Assam's Lakhimpur district, part of the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha area, serving as a semi-urban hub with agricultural and flood-prone riverine terrain. Manab Deka of BJP is the current MLA, elected in the 2021 Assam assembly elections.

He won with 70,387 votes (45per cent share), defeating INC's Joy Prakash (67,351 votes, 43per cent) by a narrow margin of 3,036 votes. Annual flooding from the Subansiri and Ranganadi rivers disrupts farming and infrastructure, demanding stronger embankments and relief systems.

Connectivity via poor roads, youth unemployment beyond agriculture, and irrigation needs persist in this competitive seat. Ethnic diversity fuels demands for inclusive development and welfare schemes.
