Mohammed Shiyas of Congress secures a decisive win in Kochi, defeating CPI(M)’s K.J. Maxy by over 8,000 votes in a closely watched contest.
Kochi Assembly constituency, numbered 80, is situated in Ernakulam district of Kerala and is part of the Ernakulam parliamentary constituency.
Established under the 2008 delimitation, it encompasses 20 wards of Kochi Municipal Corporation (including Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, Mulamkuzhi, and Amaravathy) plus Kumbalangi and Chellanam gram panchayats in Kochi taluk.
This urban seat, with nearly 179,000 electors, pulses with commercial vibrancy from port activities, tourism, trade, and a diverse population blending historic enclaves and modern hubs near the bustling Kochi harbor. CPI(M), aligned with the Left Democratic Front (LDF), holds sway since 2016, with K.J. Maxy (also spelled Maxi) as the current MLA.
In 2021, he secured victory with around 48,000 votes, defeating INC's Tony Chamminy by a margin of 14,079 votes at 68.81per cent turnout, building on his 2016 narrow win over Dominic Presentation. Previously, INC dominated, as in 2011.
Key issues include urban flooding and waterlogging during monsoons, waste management in densely populated areas, traffic congestion amid port expansion, heritage preservation in Fort Kochi amid commercialization, fisherfolk welfare from Chellanam amid sea erosion, and affordable housing pressures from tourism influx.
These urban challenges, alongside infrastructure demands like metro extensions and road widening, fuel LDF's organizational strength in this cosmopolitan yet contested seat.
