Katwa election results 2026: BJP’s Krishna Ghosh defeats TMC’s Rabindranath Chatterjee in West Bengal

In the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election for Katwa (270), Krishna Ghosh of the Bharatiya Janata Party secured victory with 1,22,020 votes, defeating All India Trinamool Congress candidate Rabindranath Chatterjee, who polled 86,954 votes. The BJP won by a margin of 35,066 votes in a decisive contest. CPI(M)’s Sanjib Kumar Das finished third with 17,939 votes, while Congress and other candidates trailed significantly. NOTA recorded 1,486 votes.

Katwa (constituency no. 270) is located in Purba Bardhaman district and forms part of the Bardhaman Purba Lok Sabha constituency. The town of Katwa, situated at the confluence of the Bhagirathi and Ajay rivers, has historical and religious significance as the birthplace of Nityananda, a companion of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. The area supports a mixed economy of agriculture and trade, with the Katwa river ghats serving as important commercial hubs.

In 2021, TMC's Rabindranath Chatterjee won the seat. In 2016, Katwa was held by TMC. Interestingly, Rabindranath Chatterjee was originally a Congress leader who won the seat on a Congress ticket multiple times in 2006, 2001, and 1996, before joining the TMC ahead of the 2016 elections. His political journey from Congress to TMC mirrors a broader trend of Congress-to-TMC migration in Bengal. The BJP has not fielded a candidate in Katwa for 2026, making this essentially a two-party contest between TMC and Congress, with Congress fielding Ranajit Chatterjee. The absence of BJP opens up the possibility of anti-incumbency votes consolidating behind Congress.
