Kangayam Assembly constituency is located in Tiruppur district of Tamil Nadu and forms part of the Erode Lok Sabha constituency. NSN Nataraj of AIADMK secured 71,122, beating TVK candidate Mani Gounder by a margin of 8,133 votes.
The seat lies in the Kongu region of western Tamil Nadu and represents an agrarian and textile-linked belt. Elections in the constituency have typically seen contests between the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), the Indian National Congress (INC), and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), reflecting shifting alliance patterns in the region.
In the 2016 Assembly elections, the constituency had 2,33,793 electors, with 1,84,428 valid votes polled. AIADMK candidate U Thaniyarasu secured victory with 83,325 votes, defeating INC candidate P Gopi, who received 70,190 votes. The margin of victory stood at 13,135 votes, giving the AIADMK a clear win in the constituency.
Earlier, in the 2011 Assembly elections, Kangayam had 1,93,597 electors, with 1,58,338 valid votes recorded. AIADMK candidate N Nataraj won the seat with 96,005 votes, defeating INC candidate S Videyal Sekar, who secured 54,240 votes. The winning margin of 41,765 votes reflected strong support for the AIADMK during that election cycle.
Historically, the constituency has seen alternating political outcomes. INC candidate S Sekar won the seat in 2006, while AIADMK’s M Selvi secured victory in 2001. Earlier, DMK candidate N S Rajkumar Manraadiar won the constituency in 1996, indicating that Kangayam has experienced shifting voter preferences shaped by broader political trends in Tamil Nadu.
