Congress candidate Roy K Paulose secures a strong victory in Idukki, polling over 70,000 votes and defeating Kerala Congress (M)’s Roshy Augustine by a margin of more than 23,000 votes.
Idukki Assembly constituency, numbered 91, lies in Idukki district of Kerala under the Idukki parliamentary constituency. Formed in 1957 and redrawn in the 2008 delimitation, it spans rural panchayats like Vathikudy, Arakkulam, Kudayathoor, and Mariapuram across Thodupuzha and Udumbanchola taluks, with around 141,000 electors.
This general seat features cardamom-rubber farms, small settlements, Christian communities, and scenic highlands near reservoirs, supporting agriculture, minor tourism, and plantation labor in the Western Ghats' lush terrain. Kerala Congress (Mani) [KC(M)], part of UDF, holds strong with Roshy Augustine as current MLA and Minister for Water Resources since 2001 (barring brief interruptions).
In 2021, he won with 49,567 votes (35.07per cent), defeating BDJS's Biju Madhavan (40,244 votes) by 9,323 votes (6.60per cent) at 76.69per cent turnout—after 2016's 10,864 margin and consistent dominance. KC(M)'s church-labor base outpaces LDF's CPI(M) and BJP allies.
Key issues include crop losses from monsoons, ghat road landslides, youth migration despite remittances, water disputes near dams, poor rural healthcare-schools, eco-threats from quarrying, and demands for irrigation, electricity reliability, and tourism infrastructure. These sustain UDF's appeal in this verdant, community-driven hill pocket.
