NEW DELHI: In West Bengal’s Hariharpara, AITC’s Niamot Sheikh emerged as the winner, defeating AJUP’s Bijoy Sekh by 12,665 votes. Niamot Sheikh received 80,339 votes, while Bijoy Sekh secured 67,673 votes.
There were a total of 2,45,484 registered voters on the electoral rolls for the 2026 Assembly election in Hariharpara Assembly constituency, of whom 1,26,586 were male, 1,18,890 female and 8 belonged to the third gender.
West Bengal voted across 294 seats in two phases on April 23 and April 29, recording a combined turnout of nearly 93 per cent — the highest since Independence and one of the largest in Indian electoral history. Notably, the surge was not limited to rural strongholds but saw a dramatic rise in urban centres, with women voters outpacing men to drive the record participation.
Hariharpara is one of the 294 Assembly constituencies in West Bengal, located in Murshidabad district and forming part of the Murshidabad Lok Sabha seat. A general category constituency, it has consistently returned representation from the same political formation in recent elections, though victory margins have varied.
In the 2021 Assembly elections, Hariharpara had 247,421 registered electors, of whom 216,075 cast valid votes. The seat was won by
Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Niamot Sheikh, who secured 102,660 votes. Indian National Congress candidate Mir Alamgir (Palash) finished second with 88,594 votes, trailing by a margin of 14,066 votes.
In the 2016 Assembly elections, the constituency had an electorate of 218,299, with 189,291 valid votes recorded, reflecting a turnout of 86.74 per cent. TMC candidate Niamot Sheikh also won the seat, securing 71,502 votes. Congress candidate Alamgir Mir (Palash) came second with 66,499 votes, losing by a margin of 5,003 votes.
