In the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026, Pradip Lodha of the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a comfortable victory in Garbeta (Assembly Constituency 233), defeating TMC candidate Uttara Singha Hazra by a margin of 26,225 votes.Lodha polled 1,13,752 votes after all 18 rounds of counting, while Hazra secured 87,527 votes.
Garbeta (No. 233) lies in Paschim Medinipur district within South Bengal's Jangalmahal fringe on the eastern edge of laterite plateau forests and undulating plains, comprising Garbeta I community development block plus Amlasuli, Makli, Patharpara, Sarabot Jogardanga, Piyasala, and Sarboth gram panchayats of Garbeta II block; this predominantly rural general constituency (96.47per cent rural, 25.02per cent SC, 9.42per cent ST per 2011 census) sustains agrarian communities through paddy and subsistence crops across 291,213 population with 243,407 electors reliant on rain-fed farming amid mining pockets and forested tracts near Jhargram (ST) Lok Sabha.Tribal land rights, irrigation deficits, youth migration, Naxal-era rehabilitation gaps, poor forest roads, and inadequate health-water access dominate 2026 voter concerns, compounded by industrial displacement fears and underdevelopment legacies in this sensitive Jangalmahal zone. Bipolar AITC-BJP contests post-2011 supplanted CPI(M)'s hold (Susanta Ghosh 2011), driving 92per cent record turnout in polarized tribal-rural polls with CPI(M) third.
In the 2021 elections, AITC's Uttara Singha Hazra (female, 56) defeated BJP's Madan Ruidas by 10,572 votes (5.2per cent margin from 207,681 total votes), retaining after Ashis Chakraborty's 2016 win. Marginal AITC seat with narrowing gap amid BJP surge; critical bellwether in Paschim Medinipur's 16 seats and Jangalmahal tribal arithmetic.
