Delhi Exit Poll 2025 Live: After casting his vote, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar says 'voting oxygen for democracy'
Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Wednesday called voting the "oxygen for democracy" and said exercising of franchise was the biggest right given to the people.
Dhankhar and his spouse Sudesh cast their votes here for elections to the Delhi Legislative Assembly. Later, he told reporters that voting was the oxygen of democracy.
"The basis of democracy is voting, and voting is the mother of all rights. There is no right above this," he said.
Democracy holds meaning only when every person casts their vote judiciously and freely, he added.
"India is an example for the world. (It is) the oldest democracy, the largest democracy, the strongest democracy, the most vibrant democracy, where change in power or stability in governance is evident only through voting," Dhankhar said.
The vice-president reminded that when the country became independent, every adult person, male or female, was given the right vote, whereas this was not the case in many big democratic systems of the world that got independence before India.
He also lauded the arrangements made by the Election Commission for smooth conduct of the democratic exercise.
"The technology that we have adopted, the speed with which the result of your voting is declared publicly, the world is appreciating it," he said. (PTI)

Delhi Exit Poll 2025 Live: Unique 'space' themed polling booth grabs eyeballs in Vikaspuri
As voters in Delhi turned out to cast their votes in the Assembly elections on Wednesday, a polling booth in the Vikaspuri constituency became the centre of attention with its unique decorations themed ‘Chandrayaan se Chunav tak Bharat ki Udaan’.
Volunteers at the booth dressed as astronauts to assist voters, enhancing the space-themed ambience, which also featured telescopes and bioscopes to engage the electorate.
Voter Turnout Reaches 46.55% by 3 PM
According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), Delhi recorded a 46.55% voter turnout by 3 PM. The North-East district led with the highest polling percentage at 52.73%, while New Delhi district had the lowest turnout at 43.10%, just behind Central district, which stood at 43.45%.
Turnout figures for other districts as of 3 PM were:
- South West: 48.32%
- East: 47.09%
- North: 46.31%
- North West: 46.81%
- Shahdara: 49.58%
- South: 44.89%
- South East: 43.91%
- West: 45.06%
Voting for all 70 assembly constituencies in Delhi, along with by-polls in one seat each in Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh, began at 7 AM and will continue until 6 PM under tight security.
Earlier in the day, the District Election Office (DEO) of North Delhi dismissed claims of voter coercion at the Sainik Vihar polling station in Shakur Basti. Allegations surfaced on social media, with AAP accusing Delhi Police of “hijacking the election.”
Responding to a complaint received at 12:33 PM, the DEO stated on platform X: "Upon receiving the complaint, the Flying Squad (FST) was immediately dispatched to the location. The team reached the site and initiated an inquiry."
The investigation confirmed that voters had exercised their franchise freely, without any external pressure.

Upon receiving the complaint, the Flying Squad (FST) was immediately dispatched to the location. The team reached the site and initiated an inquiry."
The inquiry revealed that the voters had cast their ballot independently, without any external influence. (ANI)

There was a brief commotion at a polling booth in Seelampur where a bogus voter was caught casting a vote on someone else’s identity. The incident occurred at Aryan Public School, Booth Level Officer, Seelampur, Gayatri, said.
BJP nominee from the seat, Anil Gaur, accused the rival Congress and the AAP of bringing 300-400 fake voters from neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.
Special Commissioner of Police D.C. Srivastava confirmed getting complaints of attempted bogus voting. "Two persons have been detained on the allegation of bogus voting. The facts are being verified." (IANS)

Aam Aadmi Party MP Raghav Chadha on Wednesday alleged that the security personnel deployed outside the polling stations not allowing their relievers to go inside the polling booth.
Chadha claimed that they have received several such complaints in almost half the booths in the New Delhi assembly constituency as the national capital held polls for its eighth Assembly.
Speaking to reporters, Chadha said, "...Both the reliever and the polling agent are given the status of polling agent. But such complaints are coming from many places in New Delhi assembly constituency. In almost half the booths, this complaint is coming that the reliever is not being allowed to go inside. Delhi Assembly Election Exit Polls: FIR against AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan for violating Model Code of Conduct
Delhi Police filed an FIR against AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan for violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), reported ANI. The case, lodged at Jamia Nagar police station, invokes sections 223/3/5 of the BNS and Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act. Khan is contesting from Okhla. Voting for the 70 Delhi Assembly constituencies began on February 5, with tight security. Authorities have registered 1,076 MCC violation cases and arrested over 34,000 individuals for various offenses. Additionally, 469 illegal firearms, over 1.1 lakh liters of illicit liquor, and narcotics worth Rs 77.9 crore were seized during pre-poll operations.
Delhi went to cast their votes on Wednesday for 70 assembly constituencies, as more than 1.5 crore registered voters participated in shaping the capital's governance.

AAP's manifesto focused on extending existing welfare programmes including free electricity, water, and bus travel, alongside financial assistance for women, students, and elderly citizens. BJP has announced new welfare schemes, comprising stipends for women and traders, and reduced gas cylinder prices.

AAP's Arvind Kejriwal seeks a third straight term as chief minister, whilst BJP attempts to secure power after a 30-year absence. Congress strives to re-establish its presence after being out of power for ten years.
Key candidates include former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal competing against BJP's Parvesh Verma and Congress's Sandeep Dikshit, while CM Atishi faces challenges from BJP's Ramesh Bidhuri and Congress's Alka Lamba.
AAP's manifesto focused on extending existing welfare programmes including free electricity, water, and bus travel, alongside financial assistance for women, students, and elderly citizens. BJP has announced new welfare schemes, comprising stipends for women and traders, and reduced gas cylinder prices.
Congress campaigned on promises of financial support for unemployed youth, women, and free electricity for low-consumption households.
The electoral process involves over 1.1 lakh officials and 60,000 security personnel ensuring orderly polling. The voter demographic includes 82.7 lakh male and 72.4 lakh female voters, utilising more than 21,500 ballot units and 18,943 VVPAT machines.
Once the voting concludes, exit polls, which were restricted until 6.30 pm, will be broadcast on news channels and shared across social media platforms.
The vote counting is scheduled for February 8.
