The Doom Dooma constituency in Assam witnessed a direct contest between BJP leader Rupesh Gowala and Congress’s Durga Bhumij, with both candidates seeking to secure a crucial mandate. Gowala emerged victorious after securing a total of 86,009 votes. He won by a margin of 55,382 votes.
As the state awaits the final results, exit polls from several agencies have projected a comfortable majority for the BJP-led alliance, suggesting that the ruling government is likely to return to power. Such an outcome would see Himanta Biswa Sarma continue as the chief minister of Assam.
Polling for all 126 constituencies took place on April 9, and the state recorded an impressive voter turnout of over 85 per cent.
This high level of participation was not limited to rural areas alone, as urban centres also reported strong voter engagement, reflecting widespread enthusiasm among the electorate.
Doom Dooma is an assembly constituency in Assam's Tinsukia district, part of the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha area, recognised as a tea industry hub with diverse Adivasi and tea tribe communities.
Rupesh Gowala of BJP serves as the current MLA, also holding a cabinet position for Labour Welfare, Tea Tribes, Adivasi Welfare, and Home Affairs. In 2021, he won with 49,119 votes (42per cent share), defeating INC's Durga Bhumij (40,981 votes, 35per cent) by 8,138 votes.
Tea workers' welfare, including wage hikes, housing, and healthcare in estates, drives demands amid labor unrest. Flooding risks, poor rural roads, and youth unemployment beyond plantations challenge this industrial-agricultural zone. Balancing tribal development with industrial growth remains a voter priority.
