Digboi constituency assembly elections 2026: BJP’s Suren Phukan beats Rajjor Dal’s Dulal Moran

Assam’s Digboi constituency saw BJP’s Suren Phukan register a big win against Rajjor Dal’s Dulal Moran. Phukan secured a total of 65,690 votes and won against Moran with a margin of 41,073 votes.

Exit polls released by multiple agencies have suggested that the BJP-led government is on track to secure a comfortable majority, a development that would ensure Himanta Biswa Sarma retains his position as chief minister.

Elections for all 126 constituencies were conducted on April 9, and the state witnessed a voter turnout exceeding 85 percent, among the highest recorded in recent years.

Importantly, this strong participation was seen not only in rural regions but also in urban areas, indicating a high level of engagement among voters across Assam.

Digboi is an assembly constituency in Assam's Tinsukia district, part of the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha area, renowned as India's oldest oil town with refineries, tea gardens, and a semi-urban profile. Suren Phukan of BJP is the current MLA, elected in 2021 and re-elected from 2016.

In 2021, he won with 59,217 votes (55per cent share), defeating INC's Sibanath Chetia (32,241 votes, 30per cent) by a margin of 26,976 votes. Oil refinery-related pollution, employment beyond the energy sector, and infrastructure like roads amid rapid urbanization strain resources.
