Coronavirus live updates: Maharashtra reports 960 Covid deaths, highest so far

India recorded 3,26,098 new cases and 3,890 fatalities on Saturday, as per Covid data collated from state government figures. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 31,30,17,193 samples were tested for Covid-19 up to May 14, 2021. Of these, 16,93,093 samples were tested yesterday. "Second wave of Corona has created a chaos, the state has consistently sustained infection rates above 20% for the last eight days, while more than 100 patients have been dying every day for nine consecutive days. It's a matter of concern that nine hill districts' share in Corona deaths in Uttarakhand is increasing. From May 1-13 ,there are 301 deaths in hill districts (18.6% of all death/state). In comparison, March 15 to April 30, hill districts had 312 death (11.9% of all death/state)," Nautiyal added.

West Bengal government announces complete lockdown till May 30

West Bengal Chief Secretary announces additional restrictions in view of surge in Covid cases in the state starting from Saturday till May 30.Some of the highlights of the restrictions announced so far are:



  • All private offices, schools, colleges will remain closed.
  • Bazaars, markets, shops selling vegetables, fruits, milk, bread to only remain open from 7-10am.
  • Sweets shops to remain open between 10 am to 5pm.
  • Local trains, metro services, inter state bus/train services, inland waterways to remain closed.
  • All political, cultural and religious assemblies are banned.
  • All industries apart from essential commodities and Covid-related products will be restricted.
  • Intra-state goods trucks movement restricted except for essential supplies.
  • Private cars, taxis, auto movement to be restricted unless travelling to and from hospitals, diagnostic centres, etc.
  • Banks will be functional from 10 am to 2 pm.
  • Marriage functions allowed with only 50 people.
  • Funeral to be allowed with maximum 20 people.
  • Tea gardens have been kept outside the purview of the restrictions but with only 50% workforce.
  • All outdoor activities between 9 pm to 5 am including movement of public will be prohibited apart from essential services.
  • If these guidelines are not followed, then cases of disaster management act will be given.

Of the 4,000 Covid deaths recorded in the country, 850 are being reported in Maharashtra, which is 31% of total deaths per day
"About 22% of the total Corona positive cases in the country are from Maharashtra. A few days ago, it was 31%. If we talk about active cases, 14% are from Maharashtra. Still, we are cooperating with the state government despite the fact that the government has completely failed in handling the pandemic crisis," former Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis wrote to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi in response to the latter’s recent letter to PM Modi. Fadnavis has urged the Congress president to refrain from politics of negativity and act as a responsible opposition.
