NEW DELHI: Deepanjan Kumar Guha of the Bharatiya Janata Party won the Chandannagar constituency with 86,273 votes, defeating Trinamool Congress candidate Indranil Sen by a margin of 13,441 votes. Sen secured 72,832 votes. CPI(M)'s Monish Panda finished third with 22,760 votes, followed by Congress's Ratan Kumar Golder with 1,112 votes.
Twelve candidates contested from Chandannagar in West Bengal's 2026 Assembly Election, along with NOTA.
Chandannagar (constituency no. 189), officially Chandannagore, is located in Hooghly district and falls under the Hooghly Lok Sabha constituency. The city itself carries a rich colonial heritage as a former French territory, finally merged with India in 1950. Its 18th-century waterfront, the Strand, and the famous Jagadhatri Puja are cultural landmarks that define the constituency's identity. The area is largely urban, housing the Chandannagar Municipal Corporation.
In 2021, singer-turned-politician Indranil Sen of the TMC retained the seat, having won it previously as well. Deepanjan Kumar Guha of the BJP had contested in 2021 as well and was again the party's nominee for 2026. In 2016, Indranil Sen won comfortably on a TMC ticket, with the Left Front and Congress providing the main opposition. Sen's popularity as a music personality had consistently helped the TMC consolidate votes here.
The 2026 contest was effectively a repeat of the previous election's main contest, with both the TMC and BJP retaining their respective candidates, while Congress hoped to revive its presence through Ratan Kumar Goldar.
