NEW DELHI: Jibesh Roy of the Asom Gana Parishad won the Bilasipara assembly seat in Assam, defeating Amrit Badsha of the Indian National Congress by a narrow margin of 2,694 votes. Roy secured 85,937 votes, while Badsha polled 83,243 in one of the closest contests in the region.
Sabana Aktar of the All India United Democratic Front finished a distant third with 4,350 votes. Independent candidate Sheikh Hedayetullah and candidates from the All India Trinamool Congress and Rashtriya Ulama Council secured marginal vote shares.
Bilasipara, a subdivision-level town in Dhubri district, is a general constituency and part of the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat. The area is administratively divided into Bilasipara East and Bilasipara West, both of which have seen varied political outcomes in previous elections.
The 2026 contest witnessed a tight fight between AGP and Congress, reflecting shifting political dynamics in the constituency. In earlier elections, different parties have held influence in the Bilasipara region, making it a competitive seat.
The constituency recorded a high voter turnout of 89.15%, significantly higher than 81.8% in 2021. Assam’s 2026 assembly elections saw a record turnout of 85.9%, the highest since 1951. Women voters registered a turnout of 86.5%, surpassing male participation at 85.3%, reflecting strong electoral engagement across the state.
