Balurghat election result 2026: BJP's Bidyut Roy defeats TMC's Arpita Ghosh by 47,576
In West Bengal's Balurghat, Bharatiya Janata Party's Bidyut Roy emerged victorious with 95,697 total votes. Trinamool Congress' Arpita Ghosh trail behind with just 48,121 votes.
Balurghat is a general (unreserved) constituency in Dakshin Dinajpur district of West Bengal, forming part of the Balurghat Parliamentary Constituency. In 2026, the candidates include Arpita Ghosh of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Bidyut Roy of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Pradip Kumar Mitra of the Congress.
In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, Balurghat had 1,80,390 registered electors, of whom 1,52,092 valid votes were cast. BJP candidate Ashok Kumar Lahiri won the seat with 72,129 votes, defeating TMC candidate Sekhar Dasgupta, who secured 58,693 votes, by a margin of 13,436 votes. The result marked a shift from the 2016 elections, when the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) had held the seat with a margin of just 1,450 votes over the TMC.
Balurghat serves as the district headquarters and has both urban and rural characteristics. The local economy involves trade, services, agriculture, and small-scale industries. Key issues include civic infrastructure, employment, and agricultural support for surrounding rural areas. Residents call for better roads, drainage, reliable electricity, and improved healthcare and educational facilities.
