NEW DELHI: Sumana Sarkar of the Bharatiya Janata Party won the Balagarh constituency with 1,25,624 votes, defeating TMC candidate Ranjan Dhara by a margin of 41,914 votes. Dhara secured 83,710 votes. CPI(M)'s Bikash Golder finished third with 10,175 votes, followed by BSP's Harichand Majumdar with 1,803 votes, Congress's Ashok Biswas with 1,487 votes, and SUCI(C)'s Sukdeb Biswas with 1,372 votes.
Balagarh (constituency no. 191) is a Scheduled Caste-reserved seat in Hooghly district, part of the Hooghly Lok Sabha constituency. It is an overwhelmingly rural constituency, with over 78 per cent of its population living in rural areas. The SC population comprises a significant 40 per cent of the total constituency, reflecting the seat's reserved status. The constituency covers the entire Balagarh community development block along with parts of Chinsurah-Mogra block.
In 2021, TMC's Manoranjan Bapari, a celebrated Dalit author and social activist, won the seat by a narrow margin, with the BJP polling 43 per cent of the vote. In 2016, TMC's Ashim Kumar Majhi won the seat.
The constituency's high Scheduled Caste voter concentration makes social welfare schemes a particularly important electoral issue.
