AIADMK's Jayasankaran A P emerges victorious, securing 80843 votes against TVK's Selvabharathi R by a 15318 votes.
Attur Assembly constituency is located in Salem district of Tamil Nadu and is reserved for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Caste category. The constituency forms part of the Kallakurichi Lok Sabha constituency and has historically witnessed contests between the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), and the Indian National Congress (INC), reflecting the shifting alliance dynamics in the region.
In the 2016 Assembly elections, the constituency had 2,34,136 electors, with 1,86,788 valid votes polled. AIADMK candidate Chinnathambi R M secured victory with 82,827 votes, defeating INC candidate Arthanari S K, who polled 65,493 votes. The margin of victory stood at 17,334 votes, giving the ruling party a comfortable win in the constituency.
Earlier, in the 2011 Assembly elections, Attur had 1,96,894 electors, with 1,58,536 valid votes recorded. AIADMK candidate Madheswaran S won the seat with 88,036 votes, defeating INC candidate Arthanari S K, who secured 58,180 votes. The winning margin of 29,856 votes reflected a strong performance by the AIADMK during that election cycle.
Historically, the constituency has alternated between major parties. In 2006, INC candidate Sundaram M R won the seat, defeating AIADMK’s Murugesan A K by 10,432 votes, while Murugesan A K had earlier secured victory for AIADMK in 2001. Earlier electoral cycles, including 1996, 1991, 1989, and 1984, also saw victories for DMK, AIADMK, and INC candidates, indicating that Attur has experienced fluctuating political preferences influenced by broader state-level political trends.
