UP polls: Partners RLD-SP select candidates on different criteria
The Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) has chosen educated candidates hailing from the constituency and with no criminal background, while partner the Samajwadi Party picked them on their 'winnability' factor as the alliance announced the first list of nominees for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls. The alliance of Akhilesh Yadav's and Jayant Chaudhary's parties, which was stitched last year, on Thursday announced candidates on 29 seats – 10 from the SP and 19 from the RLD - in western Uttar Pradesh which will go to polls on February 10.

BJP to fight 38 out of 40 seats in Goa Assembly polls, may name candidates after January 16: Party functionary
BJP, which currently rules Goa, has decided to contest 38 out of the total 40 Assembly seats in the state, where elections will be held next month, a senior party functionary said on Friday. The office-bearer said that in two constituencies - Benaulim and Nuvem - the party will not field any candidate on its symbol. Traditionally, people in Benaulim and Nuvem constituencies vote for non-BJP candidates. These two are Christian-dominated seats. Currently, Benaulim is represented by Churchill Alemao, who after getting elected on the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) ticket, shifted to the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) last month, while Nuvem constituency is represented by Wilfred D'Sa, who had won the last election as a Congress candidate, but later joined the ruling BJP.
Reacting to BJP Goa election in-charge Devendra Fadnavis’s statement, former chief minister Manohar Parrikar’s son Utpal said on Thursday that if being Parrikar’s son was the criterion to get a ticket to contest assembly elections, he would have insisted on the Panaji candidature during 2019 bypoll after his father’s demise.

Masood’s brother Nauman quits RLD, joins BSP
Amidst hectic party hopping over three days, there were more ripples in west UP politics with Nauman Masood — younger brother of former Congress veteran Imran Masood who switched to Samajwadi Party — quitting RLD to join BSP.
