NEW DELHI: Habbey Teron of the Bharatiya Janata Party won the Amri (ST) constituency with 50,273 votes, defeating Independent candidate Bikram Hanse by a margin of 23,910 votes. Hanse secured 26,363 votes. Independent candidate Wilson Terang finished third with 972 votes. NOTA recorded 1,829 votes.
The Amri (ST) assembly constituency in Assam's West Karbi Anglong district is awaiting its first election result, with counting scheduled for Monday. The seat, created under the 2023 delimitation exercise and reserved for Scheduled Tribes, went to polls on April 9.
As a newly formed constituency, Amri has no sitting MLA or past electoral record. The BJP fielded Dr Habe Teron as its candidate, who is considered a key contender in the absence of a Congress nominee. Teron has also received backing from Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang.
With no previous election data or victory margins available, the contest in Amri marks a fresh political beginning.
The election campaign in Amri has largely revolved around issues that affect tribal communities across the region. Among the most pressing concerns are recurring land disputes, particularly those linked to evictions from grazing reserves. Residents have also highlighted the lack of adequate infrastructure and educational facilities, especially in the hilly terrain of West Karbi Anglong. Unemployment among tribal youth remains a major issue, with many forced to migrate in search of better opportunities.
