Do you wake up bloated and backed up? Well, you are not alone. Constipation affects millions of people worldwide. While chronic constipation needs to be checked by your physician right away, occasional digestive problems can be resolved with some simple interventions. Dr Tanya Elliott, a board-certified internal medicine specialist and allergist based in New York City, has shared an effective solution for constipation that does not require medication or expensive treatments. In a video shared on Instagram, she explains the ‘I love you’ technique, which is just as effective.

Constipation is not just uncomfortable; it can leave you feeling sluggish, bloated, and frustrated throughout the day. Most people reach for over-the-counter laxatives or fibre supplements without understanding the root of their digestive issues. What if you do not need expensive supplements or unpleasant drinks to get things moving? Dr Elliott has suggested a massage technique that will stimulate bowel movements. “The I love you technique helps you move stool through your colon,” the doctor said. So no more feeling bloated or spending hours on the toilet.

The ‘I love you’ technique is quite simple but effective in moving waste through your digestive system more efficiently. This technique includes three steps, Dr Elliott explains.

“Start by making the letter I. Start on your left side, just below your ribcage, and move down to your hips. Repeat this massage 10 times,” the doctor explains.

“Next, the letter L. Start on the right side of your ribcage, come all the way across to your left side, then move down to your left hip. There’s your L. Repeat this 10 times,” she adds.

“And lastly, U. Start on your right hip, move up to your right ribcage, across to your left ribcage, and back down to your left hip,” the doctor says. Repeat this gentle massage 10 times. “You could do this in the shower with soap and water. And do not be afraid to massage it.”

If you are someone who ends up spending hours on the toilet but has no success with bowel movements, this technique may help. The best part? You can do this technique anywhere, anytime. You can do this in the shower and empty your bowels before stepping out.

While the ‘I love you’ technique is highly effective, it is important to understand that this is not a magic trick. A healthy lifestyle is key to better digestion. Focus on eating a fibre-rich diet filled with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. Fibre will help add bulk to your stool and promote regular bowel movements. Also, ensure you drink plenty of water throughout the day. Hydration is crucial for digestive health. Along with these, incorporate regular physical activity. You do not necessarily have to spend hours in the gym. Set aside 30 minutes a day for a walk. This will stimulate your digestive system and help you poop naturally.
