Why is “Boycott Thailand” trending on social media? Hindu God's idol demolition video goes viral online
“Boycott Thailand” is trending on social media, and recently, there has been a lot of controversy along the Thailand-Cambodia border due to the ongoing tension, where faith and nationalism seem to have collided. A viral video showing the partial destruction of a Lord Vishnu statue sparked an uproar among Indians and religious communities worldwide.
Social media went wild and amplified the moment, creating outrage and international debate about respect for faith, sovereignty, and diplomacy.
Thailand, known for its Buddhist heritage and as a beloved travel destination for Indian tourists, suddenly found itself at the center of an unexpected religious storm.
The call to “Boycott Thailand” began trending across platforms, with many questioning whether cultural heritage and spiritual sentiments were caught in the crossfire of border politics.
Social media erupted in anger after videos emerged showing a statue of Lord Vishnu being damaged near the Thai-Cambodian border. The statue, which was built in 2014, stood in Cambodia’s An Ses area, about 100 metres from the Thai border, according to an India Today report. The video led to immense outrage among Indian users, who viewed the act as a grave disrespect to Hindu beliefs.
The viral footage, showing the demolition, sparked a flood of online reactions. Hashtags such as #BoycottThailand and #BoycottPattaya began trending on X and Instagram.
One user wrote, “Dear Indian friends: Please reconsider travelling to Thailand. Hindu heritage on Cambodian land has been destroyed … Why support a country that disrespects your faith?”. Another post read, “Thailand brought down Lord Vishnu statue, I want to start the ‘Boycott Thailand’ and ‘Boycott Pattaya’ campaigns … Hope my Hindu brethren support this cause.”
The statement further alleged that Cambodian troops had built the statue on disputed territory to claim sovereignty, leading the Thai forces to act within their national jurisdiction, and expressed “sincere regret for any discomfort that may have arisen from misunderstandings" caused by the images.
On the other side, Cambodian authorities maintained their ground. Lim Chanpanha, spokesperson for the Preah Vihear authorities, told Khmer Times (link), “We condemn the destruction of ancient temples and statues that are worshipped by Buddhist and Hindu followers.” Cambodia claimed the statue was in its own territorial zone and held cultural significance for both Buddhist and Hindu devotees.
