Former NASA-linked scientist claims she ‘died’ three times – reveals what she saw: ‘My awareness separated from my body’
Some personal experiences tend to gain attention online, especially when they touch on questions science has yet to fully answer. One such case involves Ingrid Honkala, a former scientist associated with NASA and the US Navy, who has spoken about her near-death experiences and how they shaped her understanding of life.
Honkala says she has had three such experiences, starting from when she was just two years old. According to a report by the New York Post, which cited Jam Press, she fell into a cold water tank and initially felt fear and struggle. But she claims the experience quickly shifted.
“It felt like entering a deeper layer of reality that exists beyond our physical senses,” she said, adding that the panic was replaced by “an overwhelming sense of peace and stillness.”
She also described what she calls an out-of-body experience. “It felt as if my awareness separated from my body… like pure consciousness, a field of awareness and light,” she said.
Honkala claims she was aware of her surroundings during the incident and even recognized her mother, who later found and revived her.
She says she experienced similar moments twice later in life – once after a motorcycle accident at 25 and again during a medical episode at 52. According to the report, both incidents carried the same sense of calm and awareness beyond the physical body.
Despite these claims, Honkala has built a career in science and holds a PhD in Marine Science. She says her experiences did not take her away from science but instead deepened her curiosity.
“Science and spirituality may not necessarily be in conflict – they may simply be exploring the same mystery from different perspectives,” she said.
Reflecting on her experiences, she added, “Instead of seeing ourselves as isolated individuals, I began to understand that we may be expressions of consciousness.”
She believes these moments changed how she views death. “It does not feel like the end… but more like a transition in the continuum of consciousness.” she said.
