5 reasons goats are more interesting than you think

Goats often come up in conversations these days for reasons beyond farming– from organic food trends to even being discussed as unusual pets. But in India, goats have always been around quietly. They’re among the most common animals to be raised, valued for their ability to survive in tough conditions and support rural households with milk, meat, and a steady income.

Still, most people think of goats in very basic terms, hardy animals that eat anything and all look more or less the same. The truth is, goats are far more interesting than that. They have unique traits and habits that many don’t know about.

Here are five surprising facts about goats that break the usual stereotypes.

Disclaimer: The information in this article is drawn from online sources and ecological studies. Some details may vary depending on species and regions.

2/6

Not just males– female goats can have beards too

A lot of people assume only male goats grow beards, but that’s not true. Female goats can have them as well. The size and shape depend on the breed and age. Some goats also grow little flaps of skin on their necks, called wattles. They don’t serve any real purpose, but they’re harmless and pretty common.

3/6

Goats don’t actually eat everything

The image of goats chewing on clothes or plastic is quite popular, but misleading. Goats are actually picky eaters. They often nibble or mouth things out of curiosity, which makes it look like they eat everything. In reality, they prefer fresh leaves, shrubs, and tree bark. They’re natural foragers and know how to pick out the most nutritious bits of plants.

4/6

Their coats are more colourful than you think

Not all goats look alike. Their coats come in many colours and patterns– from plain black or white to mixes of browns, greys, and golden shades. Some breeds have stripes or patches, and in some cases, the colour even changes a little with age or season.

5/6

Goats are born with teeth– but not all of them

Baby goats usually have their front lower teeth already when they’re born. These “baby teeth” help them start eating early, but they later get replaced by permanent ones. Interestingly, goats don’t have upper front teeth at all. Instead, they have a hard pad that helps them chew tough plants and graze easily.

6/6

Size depends on the breed– not all goats are big

Not all goats are the same size. Some breeds are small and easy to handle, while others are much larger, bred especially for milk or meat. A goat’s size, temperament, and even its feeding habits depend a lot on its breed and the region it comes from.
