AP x Swatch Royal Pop launch goes horribly wrong as crowds push, scream and storm stores
What was supposed to be one of the biggest luxury watch drops of the year quickly turned into complete chaos across multiple cities. The launch of the much-hyped Audemars Piguet x Swatch “Royal Pop” collaboration saw massive crowds, screaming queues, cancelled store openings, and frustrated buyers in cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Dubai, and even parts of the UK.
And now, videos from the launch day are everywhere online.
From people pushing through barricades to exhausted attendees giving up after standing in line for hours, the internet is calling it one of the wildest retail launch scenes seen in recent times.
The limited-edition AP x Swatch collection had already created huge buzz online weeks before the release. So when stores finally opened sales on Saturday, thousands of people showed up hoping to grab one of the watches before stocks disappeared.
But things escalated very quickly.
In Bengaluru, videos from Phoenix Marketcity in Whitefield showed unbelievably long queues wrapping across the mall premises from early morning itself. Similar scenes were reported outside stores in Mumbai and Delhi, where crowds became increasingly difficult to control.
At Mumbai’s Palladium Mall, viral clips showed people packed tightly together while security struggled to manage the crowd. In one video, a frustrated man could be heard shouting,
“We are not animals. The store is not opening today.”
And honestly, that one sentence pretty much summed up the mood.
Several attendees later shared their frustration online, saying the excitement around the launch slowly turned stressful and aggressive.
One visitor who had queued for hours said things became “too rowdy” after a point.
“It stopped being fun. There was pushing, shouting, abusing… people were getting shoved around constantly. We were standing near the front and still got pushed out. Eventually, we just left. The watch didn’t even feel worth it anymore,” the attendee said in a viral video.
Another person claimed some people had been standing outside the venue since 5 am.
Despite mall security trying to control the crowd, many users online felt the organisers seriously underestimated how massive the hype around the collaboration would be.
The chaos wasn’t limited to India.
In Dubai, huge crowds reportedly started gathering outside Dubai Mall as early as 6:45 am. According to reports, the situation became so overwhelming that the launch event was eventually cancelled altogether.
Swatch’s regional Instagram account later released a statement saying the sale would not continue because of public safety concerns.
No new launch date has been announced yet.
Many online users actually supported the decision, saying cancelling the event was the safest option.
One attendee, who said he waited nearly seven hours across two Dubai locations, admitted the atmosphere had become “absolute chaos.”
“Safety comes first. I’d rather wait and buy it peacefully later than deal with this kind of madness,” he reportedly said.
As expected, the internet had plenty to say after the videos exploded online.
A lot of people criticised the organisers for not preparing better security and crowd systems despite knowing how popular the launch would be.
Some users suggested the brand should have gone for an online lottery system instead of physical queues.
Others pointed out that most people in line were probably resellers hoping to flip the limited-edition watches for profit later.
“I’m sure half the crowd wasn’t even interested in wearing the watch,” one user wrote.
“Easy resale money - that’s all.”
Another commented:
“They should have expected this. Limited-edition drops always attract huge crowds.”
Interestingly, the situation became so intense globally that Swatch also temporarily shut stores in several UK cities, including Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Cardiff, Sheffield, and Glasgow.
According to reports, the company cited safety concerns for both customers and staff members.
At this point, the AP x Swatch Royal Pop launch has become much bigger than just a watch release. It has turned into a full-blown viral internet moment - one that people are comparing to sneaker drops, concert stampedes, and luxury fashion launch chaos.
And honestly, judging by the videos flooding social media right now, people may remember the crowd drama more than the watch itself.
