During their reign of dominance on Earth for more than 160 million years, dinosaurs evolved into many diverse species. Although some species were vegetarian and harmless, others were fierce carnivores with sharp teeth, strong jaws, deadly claws, and gigantic sizes. If they had existed at the same time as humans, they could easily be some of the scariest creatures around. Some of the most feared dinosaurs that ever lived are listed below.

Tyrannosaurus Rex remains the most popular carnivorous dinosaur ever discovered. It existed between 68 and 66 million years ago in what is today North America, with an average length of 12 meters (40 feet) and a maximum weight of nine tonnes. One thing that made T-Rex stand out above all was its jaw power which scientists have estimated to be among the best to ever exist. Its huge size, teeth, and sharp senses made it a top hunter during its lifetime.

Spinosaurus is an even bigger predator compared to T. Rex, reaching up to 15 meters (50 feet). This species of the dinosaur existed in North Africa about 95 million years ago and is believed to be a semi-aquatic animal dwelling close to rivers. Different from the vast majority of predatory dinosaurs, Spinosaurus possessed the physique resembling that of crocodiles, including a tooth-filled snout good for catching fish. Despite its aquatic appearance, the dinosaur could hunt different animals. However, it is the massive spine sail peculiar only to Spinosaurus that distinguishes this creature.

Most people associate the term raptors with movie depictions seen in films such as Jurassic Park, but in reality, there was Utahraptor. These dinosaurs lived 125 million years ago, growing up to seven meters (23 ft) long and being considerably heavier than other raptors. Utahraptor featured huge sickle-shaped claws attached to each of its feet, giving it the ability to attack its prey.

Being one of the most massive meat-eating dinosaurs found by researchers, Giganotosaurus was discovered about 98 million years ago in the current territory of Argentina, which made this dinosaur bigger than the famous T. Rex. An impressively big skull full of blade-like teeth for tearing flesh was its prominent feature. Giganotosaurus is likely to hunt sauropod dinosaurs, the largest animals on Earth at that time.

Prior to the emergence of the infamous T. rex, the Allosaurus was one of the dominant predatory dinosaurs of North America. These beasts inhabited our planet some 150 million years ago, and grew up to 12 meters (39 ft) in length.
Allosaurus featured sturdy jaws, serrated teeth, and robust forelimbs with sharp claws. It is believed that the Allosaurus fed on the large sauropod dinosaurs, which implies a daring and aggressive hunting strategy.

The meaning of this dinosaur's name can hardly cause any confusion since Carcharodontosaurus means "shark-toothed lizard," which is quite clear because it had sharp teeth similar to a shark's. The dinosaurs stood out due to their huge body size and their sharp teeth similar to that of the great white shark. Carcharodontosaurus could reach up to 13 meters (43 ft) in length and was one of the main hunters of its territory.

The Mapusaurus is closely related to another giant predator – the Giganotosaurus. This dinosaur lived in the Argentinian regions some 95 million years ago. Perhaps what makes the Mapusaurus so terrifying is the hypothesis stating that this beast hunted in packs. The discovery of several individuals living together gives rise to the idea of cooperation during the hunting process.
