He was awarded the honorary doctorate from The World University, Arizona in 1974 and he got an honorary doctorate from Madras University in 1987. He has also been presented with Bharat Ratna by the Government of India.

Actor Vijayakanth or widely known as Captain rose to top in the Tamil film industry in the year 1984 after his movie ‘Vaidhegi Kaathirunthaal’ was released. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by the International Institute of Church Management, Florida in 2011. He has also received the Kalaimamani Award.
