She had a dream debut alongside Malayalam cinema’s leading man in a blockbuster, yet vanished from the screen afterward- Guess who
Deepa Nayar, the unforgettable Annie Chechi from the 2000 hit 'Priyam', has revealed why she vanished from Malayalam cinema after a promising debut. Choosing to prioritize her engineering studies over acting offers, Deepa later pursued a Master's abroad and a career in software engineering, ultimately settling in Australia.
Even if her name, Deepa Nayar, doesn’t immediately spark recognition, her face is unforgettable to Malayalees when the song “Minnaminni Ithiripponne Minnanathellam Ponnalla” plays in their minds. She was the beloved Annie Chechi to Tinu, Vinu, and Anu in the 2000 Malayalam hit ‘Priyam’. Starring Kunchacko Boban in the lead, the film drew inspiration from Mahesh Bhatt’s ‘Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke’ (1993), which itself was loosely based on the 1958 Hollywood romantic comedy ‘Houseboat’.In ‘Priyam’, Benny (Kunchacko Boban) unexpectedly becomes the guardian of his three young nieces and nephews, Tinu (Master Arun), Vinu (Master Ashwin Thampi), and Anu (Baby Manjima), after the passing of their parents. Deepa’s Annie, Benny’s childhood friend, returns after many years, but he does not recognise her initially. She builds a connection with the children and, with their help, gradually finds her way into Benny’s heart, determined to make her love story a reality.

A Promising Debut

Directed by Sanal, ‘Priyam’ introduced Deepa Nayar as a fresh face in Malayalam cinema. Her performance was widely praised, and the film itself became a hit.
Yet, despite such a memorable debut, she never appeared in another film, leaving fans wondering what happened and why the talented actress vanished from the limelight.
How Malayalam Cinema Quietly Dominated Indian Cinema in 2025

Deepa breaks her silence

Speaking on Instagram, Deepa shared, “Many people ask why I quit acting after just one film. They wonder if it was because my experience on the set was bad. Not at all. The set of ‘Priyam’ was amazing. It was incredibly fun, especially with all the kids around. If I were to explain what happened… my entry into the cinema was as unexpected as my exit…” Hailing from Thiruvananthapuram, Deepa is also a skilled dancer and has gained recognition through Asianet programmes. She was still a student when she acted in ‘Priyam’.

Choosing studies over stardom

She continued, “I received two or three offers after ‘Priyam’. I was a student back then. Those offers weren’t good enough to justify dropping out of my engineering studies to go and act. Hence, my parents and I decided that I complete my studies first. But after that, no more offers came. Social media wasn’t as active as it is today, right? People simply forgot that such a person existed. That’s what happened. This was also the period when talented female actors like Navya Nair, Meera Jasmine, and Bhavana were slowly making an impression in the industry.

Life after films fr Deepa Nayar

Deepa added, “After my studies, I wanted to go abroad. Thus, I moved to Melbourne University for my Master’s, and then I got busy with my career. That’s how I completely left the movie world.” Today, she works as a software engineer and is married to Rajeev Nair, who is also in the same field. The couple now lives in Melbourne, Australia, with their daughters.
