ASTRO member Cha Eunwoo, who is currently serving in the military, has been in the headlines for his involvement in an alleged tax evasion controversy. In relation to the online backlash, the idol finally released a statement on his social media account, apologizing to fans and the public who have been affected by the news.
Cha Eunwoo apologizes for the tax evasion controversy
Taking to his social media handle, the idol issued a formal apology for causing people worry and disappointment. Not only that, but he also mentioned that the matter has forced him to evaluate his role as a Korean tax-paying citizen.
His statement further read, “I am currently writing this after finishing my daily duties within the military unit. Although I am serving in the military at present, this was by no means an intentional choice to avoid this controversy. Last year, circumstances arose where I could no longer delay my enlistment, and as a result, I entered the military without being able to fully conclude the tax investigation procedures.”
He further added that no matter what, he will fully comply with any tax-related investigative procedures in order to clear the matter as soon as possible. “Going forward, I will look upon myself with even greater strictness, and with a heavier sense of responsibility, living in a way that seeks to repay the love I have received,” he concluded.
Cha Eunwoo’s tax evasion probe
A few days ago, it was reported by EDaily that Cha WEunwoo and his mother are under investigation by the National Tax Service of tax evasion. The investigation had started after it was found that the idol owed approximately 20.0 billion KRW in taxes. The investigation is also related to a company that was opened by his mother and serviced between him and his current management agency. It was determined through an investigation that the company was establish to reduce taxes as it did not offer any services, and only existed as a name on a paper.
Following the backlash, his company issued a statement citing that they are complying with all of the investigative requirements. In another report published by Dispatch, it was revealed that both of his parents had been listed as executives in the alleged paper company and were directly involved in the tax evasion controversy. The ‘True Beauty’ actor was listed as the CEO, while his mother was listed as the internal director, and his father was named finance manager as per the reports.
The matter is still under investigation as new information slowly comes to light.
